Birla Corporation's press release, issued after the Board Meeting held on 31st October 2026, sets out the September quarter (Q2 FY27) results, the cement and jute businesses, and an outlook.
Quarter at a glance
- Consolidated revenue: Rs 2,441 crore, against Rs 2,233 crore a year earlier, up 9.3%.
- Consolidated EBITDA: Rs 254 crore, against Rs 332 crore, down -23.6%.
- Consolidated net profit: Rs 37 crore, against Rs 90 crore, down -58.9%.
- Cement sales by volume: 4.54 million tons, up 6.9% from 4.25 million tons.
First half (H1FY27) consolidated revenue was Rs 5,111 crore (up 8.3%), EBITDA Rs 619 crore (down -12.8%) and net profit Rs 153 crore (down -27.1%).
Why profit fell while revenue rose
The release points to an "unprecedented increase in input costs" that could not be recovered because cement prices stayed weak. Clinker cost rose 13% and power and fuel cost rose 15% year on year, while pet coke prices rose 64%. Cement realisation per ton was Rs 4,925, up 1.7% year on year.
- EBITDA per ton for the Cement Division: Rs 482, against Rs 712 a year earlier.
- Cement Division EBITDA margin: 9.8%, down 490 basis points from a year earlier.
- The release notes weak prices and disruption to construction activity in core markets from excessive rainfall.
Volumes and sales mix
- Capacity utilisation was held at 85%, the same level as a year earlier.
- Blended cement accounted for 86% of total cement sales during the quarter; sales of blended cement grew 4% year on year.
- Premium products grew 17% year on year to 2.38 mt from 2.02 mt; premium cement was 64% of trade channel sales, against 61% a year earlier.
- Sales through the trade channel were 82%, against 79% a year earlier.
- Sales from the newly commissioned Kundanganj and Mukutban plants rose 20% and 8% respectively.
Steps on cost
- Green power was scaled up to 32% of consumption for the quarter, from 30% a year earlier.
- Coal extraction began at the Bikram coal mine in Madhya Pradesh during the quarter; production is being ramped up and is expected to deliver 180,000 tons of coal in the second half of the current financial year, which the company expects to significantly reduce fuel cost.
Jute Division
- Cash profit for the quarter: Rs 13.01 crore, against Rs 4.64 crore a year earlier.
- Revenue: Rs 155 crore, against Rs 132 crore, up 17%, helped by a 143% jump in export sales and 64% growth in shopping bag sales.
- Operating profit: Rs 6.16 crore, against Rs 4.02 crore.
- Raw jute shortage forced the division to cut working days; production declined 26% by volume year on year.
Outlook
The company says realisation from cement sales has started to improve from October as construction activity regains momentum, and it expects government spending on infrastructure to be the key growth driver, with private sector construction also gradually improving. It adds that cost pressure will persist and may continue to affect overall profitability.
